P1020053

Following her talk we had a discussion in small groups about how we can learn from our past in order to make better decisions in the present hopefully to create a more just world in the future.

July 11 – Today was USA Cultural Activity

Find all the pictures from today at this link: https://flic.kr/s/aHskg3inJW

P1010664

Activity one today was hosted by Esterhazy! Each delegation had to come up with a newscast about a problem in their country. The news cast had to be entertaining and informative. Then the judges chose which one they thought best the best of both of those things.

P1010931

Austria talked about alcoholism

P1010932

Canada chose Bill C-15

P1010933

Italy was about corruption

P1010934

P1010935

P1010936

P1010940

P1010966

P1010969

In the afternoon we did the USA Cultural Activity. Each person got a passport and had to go to certain places like the airport, the bathrooms, the pizza parlor, and office and a police station. We were all treated differently based on our pass port. Following we discussed discrimination.

P1010981

P1010665

In the evening we had an activity from planning group “Flemming”

P1010995The activity each of us had a country, in the country was a problem. The resources we had did not solve the problem so we had to trade with other countries. Some countries we were in conflict with other we were not.

P1010992

The game was all about cooperation with eachother. If everyone traded fairly each country could solve their problem, however if they only considered their own needs it would not happen.

P1010997

Only 50% of the problems in todays activities were solved with cooperation. This opened our eyes to how sometimes we think problems can be solved easily but often they are much more complicated than we think.

P1020007 Each day we are ending our day with Lullabies! Tonight we projected the words on to a TV screen in order to try a few new songs.

P1020006

July 10 – Today was Austria’s Cultural Activity

Delegation of the day today was Denmark, They did wake up  flag time, and set out the placemats for the dayP1010906

P1010660

The Aberdeen planning group prepared a great team building exercise for us today with 5 stations, each team had a turn at each station. The trick was that all the activities were explained in a different language. It was an exercise about communication and how we will be affected by it in our camp.

P1010680 P1010729

Austria had an amazing cultural activities regarding the concerns of access to alcohol for teens. We had a great discussion about how this affects us in our home countries. We got to make up a skit about it.

P1010817

After the activity the delegates called a camp meeting! They discussed some stuff they wanted to do in camp including monitos and Gala night and also addressed a few issues about respecting sleep and cleaning up after yourself

P1010825

For activity three Planning Group team Biggar used the theatre to make up skits about different conflicts we’ve seen in our lives on the topics of Sustainable Development, Diversity, Conflict and Resolution, and Human Rights. It was a lot of fun to use some costume items.

July 8 – Blanket Activity

Today’s blog is super fun because it starts at the end of the day and goes forward! So last thing first, everyone went to bed a little bit earlier than usual today because tomorrow is our excursion day!

But before that was an activity by Kikko (Spain), Finn (Canada), Julia (Brazil, Tia (Jordan) and their leader Patrick (Denmark) the planning group name “Dalmeny” named after a Saskatchewan Town. They activity they ran was a team builder and non-verbal communication game called Maze Masters. On the ground you will see the grid, the maze master has a secret puzzle that each team member must walk past but one trick, no talking to each other. A great way to build some trust and team work skills

P1010470

Activity 2 was a special treat. We invited our friends Paul, Chantelle and Rissy to talk to us about colonization in Canada in preparations for our excursion day tomorrow. They ran “The Blanket Activity”.

P1010463

The blankets on the floor represent the land and the participants represent the aboriginal people of Canada. As you will notice in the pictures we started out with lots of space and freedom and people and ended with many small spaces separated and not as big of a population.

P1010420P1010405

We are meeting with out planning group every day now! Each participant will plan at least 4 activities before the camp is over.

First Day of Camp

Today was maybe the most exciting day ever! All the homestay families dropped the kids off at the mall where a giant yellow school bus was waiting to carry everyone off to the camp site which is 45 minutes away. Everyone had a chance to meet a new friend by sitting next to someone who was not from the same delegation.

When all the delegates arrived to camp it was pure joy! Everyone was so excited to be reunited with their leaders again and the leaders were so excited to see their delegates again and hear about their adventures at homestay.

First thing we did was meet our rooms mates! We made some place mats with our name as well as a picture of our “Flag, Family, Favorite Food and what we like to do for Fun! (Yep the 4 “F”‘s) We will use the place mats at meals to allow a way to facilitate meeting new people and dining with people who might be from a different country or culture! What a great way to build global friendship. Below is a picture of each delegate with their room mate. How exciting!

Next we met our kitchen staff who prepared an amazing pasta and salad and cheese bread for dinner!

Against the Flow 2015 Kitchen Staff
Against the Flow 2015 Kitchen Staff

After dinner we did an activity about the Theme “Against the Flow” what does it mean? We talked about what the flow is in our country, if we thought it was good or frustrating and also examples of people who went against the flow to create social change. It’s only the first day of camp and we have already learned so much and have seen so many great leadership abilities in our group. This will be an amazing Step Up.

Homestays were so much fun!

Wow what a fun weekend with the homestay families, Friday was a beautiful day and many delegations spent some time outside enjoying beautiful downtown Saskatoon and some of the lakes that Saskatchewan is famous for. Saturday however the air quality was low due to some smoke from the Northern forest fires, so we found many activities do to inside.

Meanwhile at camp the leaders are having a great time preparing for the delegates to arrive. We discussed roles, had a tour of Rosthern, team building, and a camp fire. We will keep it a surprise so stay tuned tomorrow for “First Day of Camp” details.
